2012 Retina Macbook Pro

June 27th, 2012

The new 2012 15-Inch Retina MacBook Pro marks an evolution of the Mac: it’s the first of presumably the entire Mac line-up to get a Retina display, just like the iPhone and iPad.

Unlike the iPhone or iPad, however, the new Retina MacBook Pro is not aimed at the mass market. This is a professional machine, through and through.

The beauty of the Retina MacBook Pro’s display is like looking at living print. In addition the Retina MacBook Pro is the most powerful all-in-one professional notebook you can buy off the shelf using cutting-edge technology that it will take some time for the competition to catch-up with.

The new MacBook Pro has a number of impressive features over its evolutionary pregenitors, but the headlining improvement is that it’s the first Mac with a Retina display with a 2,880 x 1800 desktop resolution.

The last-generation MacBook Pro had 1,440 x 900 pixel display. The new MacBook Pros have four times as many pixels, clocking in at over five million pixels crammed into fifteen diagonal inches. Across the board, the Retina MacBook Pros have displays that seem more like windows to a world inside your Mac, as you increase pixel density in a display, you also increase the perceived realness of the objects onscreen. At a certain pixel density, on-screen objects actually become indistinguishable from real objects.

Color gamut and accuracy is so good; the only way you can get a display like this has traditionally been to pick up an expensive high-end display and have it professionally calibrated. The new Retina MacBook Pros do it all out of the box, with deeper and more accurate colors, the blackest and inkiest of blacks, and such wide viewing angles that even from the side, there are no visible color shifts.

These are all hallmarks of the in-plane switching (or IPS) LCD technology that Apple is using in the Retina MacBook Pro, and that’s worth crowing about, too: it’s the same technology Apple uses in the iPhone and iPad to give these devices a very wide view angle with no visible color shifts, and it’s almost unheard of to see laptops with IPS displays.

There’s another thing Apple did, though, to improve the clarity of the Retina MacBook Pro display. Apple’s been much criticised over the last few years for the “mirror” effect of their glossy screens. Sit in front of a modern Mac and you’re more often than not looking through your reflection. Glossy screens give better color accuracy, but suffer from being overly reflective; matte displays eliminate reflections, but are milkier than glossy ones.

With the Retina MacBook Pro, however, Apple managed to keep a glossy display while virtually eliminating reflectiveness. They accomplished this by fusing together the protective glass and underlying LCD to mitigate the mirror effect, eliminating the air gap usually found between glass and LCD through a process known as optical bonding. The result, Apple says, is a 75% decrease in reflectiveness, and while we have no way of confirming that, it’s undeniable that the Retina MacBook Pro display is the least reflective glossy Mac screen yet.

Apple just knocked it out of the park with the display on the new MacBook Pros.

Make the best out of your Summer with these fun Summer Apps for iPhone or iPad

June 22nd, 2012

Tops down, hair is blowing in the wind, kids are hitting the pool and the flight is booked for vacation… its SUMMER TIME! We did the research for you to make sure you have all the tools right at your finger tips to make it one for the record books! (and don’t worry we personally tested them to make sure they’re the best!)

1. iPump & Fitness Builder - since bikinis and board shorts are a must for summer, with the help of this app you will be beach bod ready in no time!

Price: $9.99

Though expensive, iPump is well worth the price. Stand-out features:

  • Workouts drawing from thousands of unique exercises and equipment including, weights, kettlebells, BOSU, foam roller, TRX, or no equipment needed at all!
  • Search workouts by location (hotel, home, gym, etc.), goal (arms, abs, cardio, etc.) or keyword.
  • An exercise database with incredible variety. My favorites – Core Yoga, Pilates, and 10 minute fat burner
  • Videos of each exercise.
  • The ability to edit workouts or create your own.
  • you can even set an entire work out plan and automatically set it to your calendar with motivational tips!
  • workouts are specialized per individual to fit your needs based on weight, height, gender and age!

I love that iPump offers such incredible variety in their workouts and exercises. Also available, iPump Trainer workouts for that extra push, for an extra fee.

2. timeRAZOR- Never miss out on awesome events wherever you are!

Price: FREE

This cool iPhone app is useful whether you are at home on a staycation or on vacation across the country. timeRAZOR gives you the scoop on all the cool events and activities happening wherever you are (or wherever you are going to be). Whether you are looking for free, fun activities for your kids or local nightlife for adults, you can easily find it with timeRAZOR. Stand Out Features

  • when signing up it asks for zip codes of where you live and work and where you may be in the future
  • links to your iCalander so you won’t double book events with errands or already planned outings
  • Separates events by age so you can find a fun 21+ concert or a family fun event for all ages
  • If you link to Facebook it pulls events based on your interest, so it will leave out that old folk concert for your grandparents (unless you’re into that sort of thing!)
I love that timeRazor is constantly updated so you don’t miss anything, now if only there were more hours in the day to enjoy every single thing!
3. Weber’s on the Grill App- Nothing says summer more than firing up a grill
Price: $4.99

Pool parties, bonfires and graduation parties, you can be the next grill master with  Weber’s on the Grill App. Stand out features:

  •  The slick app includes 250 grilling recipes from published Weber cookbooks, and each recipe is illustrated with a mouthwatering photo (hint: don’t try out this app on an empty stomach!).
  • the Weber’s grilling app includes a host of tips and techniques where you can learn how to trim a brisket or de-vein shrimp.
  • There’s also an integrated grill timer so you never leave the food on too long. The app is a bit on the expensive side, but grilling novices and masters alike will find something to like here.
I love that the app includes step by step instructions so even the worst cook in the world (me!) can even do it!
4. Pandora Radio App-is an excellent addition to a summer partyPrice: FreePandora Radio App since you don’t have to spend time creating a playlist – the app does it for you. Simply enter an artist you like and the Pandora app will create a customized playlist. If you prefer more variety, the app also includes playlists grouped by genre, including pop, rock, or oldies. Pandora has an excellent music selection, and the recommendations are usually spot on. You can also bookmark songs to buy later on iTunes. The more you interact and like or dislike the more likely your favorite hits will play.

5. Upacking list App http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/upackinglist/id323241118?mt=8 - Let’s face it. The most annoying part of any trip can be the packing

Price: Free

Some people like to pack over the course of a few days, and others like to shotgun the entire process overnight. I’ve tried doing it both ways and I always manage to forget something – tootbrush, cellphone charger, camera, sunglasses. Stand Out Features:

  • The app comes with 300 carefully thought-out items
  • and allows you to create unlimited lists.
  • As soon as you’re done creating a list, start packing and checking off the items in your list with a few simple taps!
Everything about this app i absolutely love! especially because when you are ready to come back home from your vacation everything your brought is saved on your phone so you won’t leave anything behind (if i had a nickel for every phone charger I’ve lost…)
Now go put on some sunscreen and soak up the sun! after all we only have 91 days of summer left!
Can you think of any others? we would love to hear your thoughts on other great summer apps!

Get Complete Control of your Mac or PC from your iPad or iPhone

June 19th, 2012

Maybe you forgot that important presentation from work on your PC,or forgot to send your sons graduation photos to your parents from your Mac, no need to worry because thanks to a wide range of VNC Clients you can now have complete Control of your PC or Mac straight from your iPad or iPhone on the go!

Here are some of our favorites for either little or NO COST!

CloudOn(FREE!)

If all you need is access to traditional, full-blown Microsoft Office-as opposed to the file compatibility then a new app called CloudOn gives you just that. The applications themselves run on the CloudOn servers, and although they look a little harsh when compared to the smooth characters and buttons on a native iOS app, they can’t be beaten for rock-solid compatibility. You need to have a Dropbox account for file storage, but this is all the better in our opinion as it means your synchronized documents will immediately appear on your regular computer so you can continue working on them when you get back to the office.

OnLive Desktop(FREE!)

You can also check out OnLive Desktop, which lets you access a Windows 7 PC complete with the Microsoft Office applications and 2GB of free storage.

LogMeIn Ingition (129.99)

LogMeIn’s Ignition  lets you control a remote Mac or PC courtesy of a free app installed on the client machine. It presents a copy of the remote desktop on your iPad or iPhone, which despite the device’s lower physical resolution, remains surprisingly usable on the portable device. It can wake a sleeping computer, so you don’t need to keep your desktop machine active to use it, and can control an unlimited number of machines, so you can access your home computer or your office machine.

Splahtop Remote Desktop ($19.99)

Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad performs a similar function, locking on to a free client app -Splashtop Streamer - running on your Mac or PC across the internet or a local network. its fast and responsive, with plenty of useful gestures through which you can implement mouse clicks, right clicks, scrolls, and so on.
