iOS 6 ins and outs

September 20th, 2012

For those who arent able to jump on purchasing the long anticipated iPhone 5 right away, Apple has given its customers the opportunity to still enjoy the 200+ features of the new phone anyways! even though the hardware may be SO last season your software doesnt have to be! After spending 24 hours with the new software we’ve picked apart the major features and put together our list of pros and cons

This App is probably my most used feature on my phone, I’ve lived in the same city my entire life and still manage to get lost. ”Beautifully designed from the ground up (and the sky down), Maps changes the way you see the world. Map elements are vector based, so graphics and text are incredibly detailed — even when you zoom all the way in — and panning is smooth. Tilt and rotate to view an area, and Maps keeps the names of streets and places where they belong. Get visual and spoken turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic updates. Even soar over cityscapes to see the sights from the air in amazing, high-resolution quality.Learn more about Maps

Thoughts:Clearly the turn by turn features of this app are a huge improvement and i’m sure will cause less accidents. The real life city view is great if you are not familiar with your surroundings or are in a new town. I also love that it pings nearby businesses, so you may be getting your oil changed and decide to grab a bite to eat, apple maps will let you know you whats around without even searching for anything! one downfall ,it may just need time to update but it seems to not be 100% up to date on its business search. Places that were searchable in the past now do not come up. I think this may have to do with Apple creating its own “maps” instead of using “google maps”.

“With iOS 6, Siri understands more languages and works in more countries.2 So you can get more things done in more places around the world. Want to know the latest scores and stats for your favorite teams and players? Thanks to iOS 6, Siri knows the answers. Or maybe it’s movie night. Siri can show you the latest reviews and showtimes. Find the best restaurants in town and make reservations. Even have Siri open your apps for you — no tapping required. Say “Launch Flight Tracker” or “Open Angry Birds” and Siri does just that. You can also use Siri to post Facebook updates and tweet for you. Learn more about Siri

Thoughts: I have a love/hate relationship with Siri, and honestly its a very rare occasion when i do ask her for anything because i have found its faster to do it myself then repeat what i say 10 times. however with the new version it does seem that she knows more and could be potentially be more useful but i still cant see myself utilizing this function on a day to day basis.

Now it’s easier than ever to interact with the world’s largest social network. And there’s no need to leave your app to do it. Share a photo to Facebook right from Camera or Photos. Post your location right from Maps. Brag about a high score right from Game Center. If you have your hands full, just ask Siri to post for you. You need to sign in to Facebook only once, and you’ll be off and sharing. Never miss another birthday or get-together, since Facebook events are integrated into Calendar. And your Facebook friends’ profile information is integrated into Contacts, so when they update an email address or phone number you automatically stay up to date. Now that’s something to post about.

Thoughts:  If you are an avid facebook user then this is an awesome feature to have. Its much easier to share links while you’re browsing and i really like the capability to post a photo without having to go into the facebook app its self. this is a feature that i personally can see myself using daily, i just hope it doesn’t cause overkill!

Your boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, loyalty cards, and more are now all in one place. With Passbook, you can scan your iPhone or iPod touch to check in for a flight, get into a movie, and redeem a coupon. You can also see when your coupons expire, where your concert seats are, and the balance left on that all-important coffee bar card. Wake your iPhone or iPod touch, and passes appear on your Lock screen at the appropriate time and place — like when you reach the airport or walk into the store to redeem your gift card or coupon. And if your gate changes after you’ve checked in for your flight, Passbook will even alert you to make sure you’re not relaxing in the wrong terminal.

Thoughts: honestly i haven’t been able to use this feature or even log in to check it out because every time i try too it says “can not connect to iTunes store” my co-worker is also having this issue,it may be a bug or it may be user error… this will be one we will have to get back to you on.

FaceTime now works over cellular networks as well as Wi-Fi, so you can make and receive FaceTime calls wherever you happen to be.3 You can even make and receive FaceTime calls on your iPad using your phone number. That means you can use FaceTime wherever you are, on any device. And never miss another wink, smile, air kiss, or eye roll.

Thoughts: I am really excited about this feature, and the reason is because i would never use facetime due to the fact that i always had to be on wifi. And since that was the case i would just end up using skype from my computer.

iOS 6 adds new calling features to your iPhone. Now when you decline an incoming call, you can instantly reply with a text message or set a callback reminder. And when things are just too hectic, turn on Do Not Disturb and you won’t be bothered by anyone — except can’t-miss contacts like your boss or your better half.

Thoughts: now you can ignore calls in style! I think this will be a good feature if you are in a meeting or in the middle of class and don’t have much time to draft your own message. I cant see myself using the “reply with message” feature often but personally i can see myself using the “remind me later” feature because i am the worse when it comes to calling people back!

As we play more with the new software we will be back with more updates, 200+ features are a lot to stumble upon, But i must say BY FAR my favorite feature is the newly added Emojis.. I dont know about you guys but i can write an entire sentence with those! let us know your thoughts on the new iOS 6 and and give us your reviews on it!

We will also be hosting a workshop October 6th to go over the ins and outs of the iOS 6 hosted by one of our apple specialist. you wont want to miss it!

The Starter Guide On Parental Controls For Apple Devices

May 10th, 2012

This Saturday May 12th, we will be hosting our Kids & Technology Event. This FREE event will take place at our showroom from 12-4pm. One of our main features will be our Parents Corner. This will include an informative step by step demonstration to internet safety on iOS and OS X devices from our Apple Experts.

If you’ve got young children, chances are they’re already quite proficient at using Apple products. This is a new generation of techy little ones, and we’ve got our work cut out for us as we attempt to stay ahead of them. I’ll guess that you’re more concerned with protecting your children from the unknown dangers of the internet, but equally important is protecting your Mac and Apple devices from your children!

Luckily, if you’ve got a Mac, MacBook, iPad, iPod, or iPhone, OS X and iOS comes with some great Parental Controls and Restrictions built right into the operating system which will help you combat both of these situations. This post serves as a starter guide in locking down your devices and making it safe for your kids to use without your direct supervision.

Time Limits:

It is a common known fact that young kids can spend hours on end on their Macs, iPads, and iPhones. But the time spent can be restricted for what you feel is the appropriate amount of time on each device. Here are the step by step tools for control:

1.When you log onto your Mac or Macbook, on the top left – click on the Apple logo.

2. A drop down menu should appear, click on System Preferences.

3. The System Preferences folder will pop up. Under the tab, System - click on Parental Controls.

4. On the Parental Controls window, on the left side you will see all the login accounts on the device.

5. To add an account, simply click on the + sign on the bottom left to add an account.

6. After that is done, select the Account for which you would like to enable Parent Controls.

7. Once you click enable Parent Control, you will be brought to a page where you will see tabs at the top labeling the control options. Click on Time Limits.

8. You have the options of Weekday Time Limits, Weekend Time Limits, and Bed Time.

9. For each feature, click the amount of time limited for Weekday and/or Weekend. And for Bedtime, choose the hours of when the computer can be accessed.

10. Once all specifications are made, click on the lock image on the bottom left. Enter in the name and password that you use to log into your account.

11. Changes made and…Finito! – Simple right?! :)

To learn more about Parental Controls and Restrictions, join us this Saturday!

This event will also feature:

  • Kids using the iPad as a teaching tool, including educational apps.
  • Kaleidescape Kids – the first movie server for children. A hands on demo from the Kaleidescape Experts.
  • Kid Ventures will be hosting an arts & craft station.
  • Free family BBQ
  • Discounts on “Kid Friendly” products

iTunes Match is Launching Soon!

October 27th, 2011

The iTunes Match was originally to-be-launched alongside iOS 5 but was pushed to the “end of October”. This service is still being tested by developers but they’re quietly preparing for its public launch.

We mentioned on our blog post Music Features from Apple: iTunes Match & Home Sharing, “iCloud will place all of your music whether its downloaded from another source other than iTunes or ripped from CDs and will match it and upgrade it to the songs that are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to your iCloud library for you to listen to anytime, on any Macs or iOS device. With 18 million songs in the iTunes store, iTunes will match your songs into the iCloud. If iTunes aren’t able to match songs, those are the only songs that you will need to upload to the Cloud yourself. All the music iTunes matches will play at plus quality, even if you original copy of the music was of lower quality. This feature is a subscription of only $24.99 a year!”

Apple has sent an email out to developers informing them that iTunes Match music libraries in iCloud will once again be wiped on Thursday, October 27th. Apple instructs developers to turn off iTunes Match on their computers and iOS devices during that time. The wipe may be in preparation for the public launch of iTunes Match.

What Steve Left Us…

October 18th, 2011

For all you who know him as Steve Jobs, the man who made Apple what it is today, he is a lot more than that. He was our modern day Einstein and much more. He gave us the personal computer, the mouse, the iPod, the iMac, and the iEVERYTHING… Well, you get the point. He was and will always be revered as a revolutionary icon in the area of technology and entertainment. When he left Apple to start Pixar, he gave us Toy Story and left another legacy behind, not only with the films he made, but with the software he developed and the business plan he implemented.

Today Apple runs off a similar business plan and with that said, don’t think for a second that Steve left Apple with nothing. It’s said that he has designs and products will continue to be released over the next 4 years. The reason we have the iPads, iPhones, Apple TV’s, and the really sweet line of computers is because he thought outside the box and kept it simple. On the iPad and the iPhone, there is one button on the front and everything else is touch. The computers are very user friendly and easy to use. Did you know that iPhone is also the first and possibly still the only multi-touch device that can be operated by the hearing and visually impaired. He made sure that everyone could use these “revolutionary and magical” devices. I think it was Apple who said revolutionary and magical and they really are.

Think for a second before the iPad was released, there was no market for tablets and no one was successful at creating one. He made an even bigger mark than before with the release of the iPad and this revolutionized the computing industry. Almost everywhere one travels, one can see an iPad or some other touchpad tablet device being used for personal entertainment or for business.

Walk into a Hyatt and you’ll see a direct result of how Steve Jobs gave so much to this world both in business use and personal entertainment. Stop focusing on hardware and focus on software for a second… iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, the advanced apps, and the most intelligent Operating System ever created OSX Lion. All these and much more on the iPhone and iPad are a result of Steve and the great minds assembled at Apple.

Yes, Apple does have a solid team of creative, driven, and talented individuals who when working with Steve made some of the most widely adaptive products since the toothbrush. Without Steve, you can expect the same, this user almost guarantees it. Even though Steve had his hand in everything, its the programmers, the designers, the web developers, the creative artists, the technicians, the testers, and everyone else that make Apple’s products so desirable. From the way they look to the way they work and what they can do, we as consumers love everything Apple and will continue to do so.

There is a lot to look forward to, like the next rumored and completely redesigned iPhone 5 which will probably be released in early 2012. Apple is working on faster chipsets for the next iPads and iPhones. There is also a rumor of an actual television that Apple is creating. I am excited to see how it interfaces with all the Apple products and whether it is like the Apple tv, if it has Gorilla Glass or what. If they do release a TV, it will be amazing. There is also talks of another mystery product that will be released and this Apple Guy’s sources don’t lie and this Apple Guy wont tell. Sorry folks, but you will have to wait and see.

It’s that “you’ll have to wait and see” that keeps the eyes of consumers on Apple. The best part is Apple knows this and they will strive to continue to produce “revolutionary and magical” products. They will also continue to lead the industry in electronics and other areas as well. Hmmmmm… Oh yeah, and have you seen their stock, it just had it’s highest ever close this past week. So, in closing, for all of you that think Apple is over, finished, done, kaput, finito… Think again, Steve has laid down the groundwork and all those Amazingly talented individuals that make Apple great will pick up right where he left off and give so much more than we as consumers could ever imagine.

Thanks.

Paul Haggar
